We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about technology, and loves solving complex problems, to join our York-based Piksel Retail team as a Systems Engineer.

If you spend your free time tinkering with routers and switches; or you can’t get your head out of that next Raspberry Pi project; we can help you put that passion into practice, supporting high profile brands in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment. It’s an old cliché but, in this role, every day really will be different. Our customers have wildly varying hardware and software requirements, covering, but not exclusive to, Microsoft or Linux environments. You’ll actively contribute to the daily management of their infrastructure, as well as the deployment of new applications and bespoke projects. We’ll need you to come on board with a good basic knowledge of Microsoft or Linux server-side technologies. Beyond that, you’ll have a passion to learn and the drive to grow; consistently helping to solve complex problems in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment. In terms of training, we’ll give you all you need to succeed. The knowledge and experience that you’ll get in this role will set you up for a great future in computer engineering.

Please note: We support systems on a 24x7 basis, so once ‘up to speed’ you will be part of an “On Call” rota operating outside of normal office hours.

What this role involves…

  • Using infrastructure-as-code tools to create and manage complex estates within public clouds
  • Using tools to manage pipelines and deployments
  • Ensuring the availability and functionality of customer platforms and services, to agreed levels of service, by pro-actively monitoring, maintaining and upgrading
  • Management of individual customer incident tickets, working through to completion within agreed deadlines
  • Providing additional support to projects as needed

What we’ll need you to bring…

Essential:

  • A working knowledge of virtualisation and cloud (VMWare/AWS/Azure), with experience of managing customers and services.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work within a team.
  • TCP/IP network administration
  • A passion for problem-solving and a desire get “under the hood” to figure out how things work.
  • Infrastucture-as-code experience, terraform preferred

Desirable:

  • An interest in or exposure to scripting languages, such as bash, python, ruby etc.
  • Exposure to either Microsoft or Linux operating systems.
  • Possess some basic knowledge of Firewalls, Routers, and Switches.
  • A background in computer or network support would be advantageous.
  • Load balancing and caching technologies and solutions
  • Middleware knowledge (Tomcat/Jetty/Weblogic)

What we’ll give you in return

  • A broad remit and the chance to get your hands on some incredible tech
  • A strong ethos of knowledge sharing including weekly Lightening talks and DevOps Community of Practice meet ups
  • The chance to work closely with some amazingly talented people
  • Ongoing learning and development resources
  • Respect for your ideas and acknowledgement for a job well-done
  • Flexible working options and a great work/life balance
  • A friendly, welcoming culture and a great social calendar
